Transparency in xfce panel?

Postby crash101 » Fri Apr 10, 2009 10:29 am

I have changed my xcfe panel settings from a fixed Position on the left to a freely movable floating bar on the bottom of my screen. This is because my personal preference is to make Presto mimic as much of the Mac OS X interface as possible. Will there be an updated version of XFCE panel in Presto to allow me to enable transparency?

Hi crash101,

You can enable transparency of the panel in the beta (latest version of xFCE is in the final release btw.) but as far as I know, when this is enabled, the panel and all items on it (icons) get the transparency (including menu bars in applications). It would be great if we could apply transparency only to the panel and not to the items on the panel...this is a xFCE thing that I don't know how to get around.

Hi crash101,

In Presto 1.0 transparency for the panel can be enabled as follows:
1. Launch a terminal (Ctrl+Alt+T).
2. Enter the command: xfce4-settings-manager
3. Click on Window Manager Tweaks.
4. Click on the Compositor tab.
5. Ensure the 'Enable display compositing' checkbox is enabled and click Close.
6. Right-click on the Panel and select Customize Panel.
7. Adjust transparency as desired and click Close.

As Marc stated, the transparency will affect the entire panel, icons included.

Hope that helps,
Brian
